Remakes

It was announced this week that New Line Cinema is going to be doing a remake of Escape from New York. The original is one of my all time favorite films, but this news doesn’t upset me. I know a lot of people get bent out of shape about this type of thing. Not me. Why don’t I get offended?

Because it doesn’t matter.

I’m not anti-remake. I wouldn’t go too far the other way and say I’m pro-remake, but I don’t see the harm in re-doing films. Why?

Because it doesn’t change the original in any way. The first versions are still out there, ready to be viewed. They’re available now (with cable, VHS, Computer Downloads, DVD, etc.) more than ever.

And because the remake might actually be a good movie.

So will I run out and seethe new version of Escape from New York the day it opens? Probably not. Will I see it on DVD? Probably. Good or bad, will it make me appreciate the original even more? Definitely.

What A Couple of Weeks!

Last Thursday (3/1) my play, “Orville and Wilbur Discuss Aerodynamics,” was done by Point of Contention theater.

Saturday Issue 3 of Mount Zion Speculative Fiction Review arrived in the mail. It has my story “Devotion and the Autumn Chill” contained within.

Tuesday Mouth Full of Bullets e-zine went live with my poem “Nothing Deadlier Known to Man.”

And to wrap it all up, I started a My Space page.

What's In A Name?

I don't really understand this whole blog mentality. I've heard that, as a writer, it's becoming an important way to reach potential readers. To me they seem like the ultimate in self-involvement.

Wait a minute, I'm incredibly self-involved. So here's my blog.

The hardest part of starting this thing was thinking of a name. I wanted something quirky and unique. I thought and thought and thought some more.

I couldn't think of anything.

Then I looked at the wall behind my desk. Among other movie memorabilia I have a movie poster for the classic film "The Alligator People." On the same wall I have one of the only valuable pieces of art I own, an Alan M. Clark print of clowns taking over a subdivision.

Staring + Thinking + Getting Frustrated At The Whole Idea Of Blogs = Inspiration!
